We're incredibly grateful: Kalyani team on Snoop Dogg's shoutout

When American rap icon Snoop Dogg shared Malayalam indie hit Kalyani on his Instagram Story, it marked a milestone few independent regional tracks can claim. But for Arjun Sunil (Arjn), Kiran Das (KDS), Vishnu V (Fifty4), Suhas Moideen, and producer Ron Vinod (Ronn), the global spotlight is the latest chapter in an extraordinary journey. Released in November 2025 after being shelved for nearly three years, Kalyani went on to clock nearly 600,000 streams a day for months. Yet, alongside its soaring popularity, one question refused to go away: Who is Kalyani? The band has now answered it by reimagining the hit with additional vocals by Shreya Ghoshal and a music video starring actress Saniya Iyappan.

Snoop Dogg's Surprise Shoutout

The moment came unexpectedly. Producer Len Prasad, a friend of Snoop Dogg's son, sent the song to the rapper, and within hours Kalyani was featured on Snoop's social media. "We're incredibly grateful. The video has gone absolutely crazy and is now close to 20 million views," said KDS. This viral endorsement not only boosted the track's streaming numbers but also introduced it to a global audience that might never have encountered Malayalam music otherwise. For a band from Kerala, this cross-cultural validation was surreal.

A Long Road to Recognition

The song's journey was far from instant. After being recorded in 2022, Kalyani sat on a shelf for three years as the members pursued other projects. When it finally dropped in late 2025, the organic growth was astonishing. Without major label support, the track amassed hundreds of thousands of daily streams, driven by word-of-mouth and social media shares. The band credits the song's emotional depth and universal theme of longing as reasons for its resonance. "We wanted to create something that felt honest. The melody and lyrics came naturally, and people connected with that authenticity," noted Arjn.

Collaborating with Shreya Ghoshal

The idea to re-record the track with Shreya Ghoshal came from a music producer familiar with the band's work. Shreya, known for her iconic playback in multiple Indian languages, had already heard Kalyani and loved it. "She's full of positive energy. When the idea came up, she was immediately on board," said Arjn. The new version includes additional Hindi lyrics penned by Pulkit Singh, while the Malayalam portions were updated by Fifty4. The band assisted Shreya with pronunciation, ensuring the regional flavour remained intact. Working with her was described as "so much fun" and a testament to how indie music can bridge gaps between genres and languages.

Bringing Kalyani to Life Visually

The music video required a compelling narrative. Rather than a typical performance clip, the team opted for a gangster-themed story with emotional weight. Director Ben presented multiple mood boards, and the band chose a semi-traditional aesthetic for costumes and locations. Casting Saniya Iyappan was a unanimous decision. "Saniya has grace. She's beautiful, can dance and act. Casting her was a no-brainer, and she absolutely aced the video," Arjn said. The visuals, combined with the song's haunting melody, created a piece that felt both rooted in Kerala's culture and universally appealing.

Challenging Norms with 'Chillara Flex'

The band is already looking ahead. Their latest release, Chillara Flex, directed by Rupan Bal—who has worked extensively in the Punjabi music industry—takes a different approach. "We don't really have a flex culture in Kerala. Malayalis are generally laid-back and don't like showing off," explained KDS. "With this song, we're trying to change that narrative. It's about encouraging people to dream big, go all out, and celebrate their achievements." This shift reflects a broader ambition to push Malayalam music into new territories, both sonically and thematically.

The Global Future of Malayalam Music

The group believes Malayalam music is on the cusp of reaching a much wider global audience. "Malayalam songs are already making noise in North India. The next generation isn't confined to its roots anymore. People are proud of where they come from, but they're also open to exploring new things. We could be the next big thing. If Spanish songs can be heard on the streets of Kerala, why can't Malayalam songs be heard on the streets of Spain? I genuinely believe that's going to happen," signed off Arjn. With the backing of international icons like Snoop Dogg and the rising tide of independent music in India, the band's journey is far from over.
