Google has released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3, delivering a surprisingly feature-packed update for Pixel users. The latest beta build adds user-facing improvements across Quick Settings, theming, blur effects, and foldable multitasking, while also addressing a serious security issue related to call forwarding scams. Pixel owners enrolled in the Android Beta Program can expect the update over the air, with the rollout beginning this weekend.

The update is available as build CP41.260731.005.A2 for the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, and Pixel Tablet. Other eligible devices receive build CP41.260731.005.B1. Google has not included the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro in this release, as both phones will pass the five-year software support mark before Android 17 QPR2 reaches a stable release.

Which Pixel devices are supported?

Eligible devices for Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 include the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 series, Pixel 8 series, Pixel 9 series, Pixel 10 series, Pixel 10a, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and Pixel Tablet. If you are already enrolled in the Android 17 beta program, Google says the new build will arrive automatically as an over-the-air update unless you opt out. If you have not joined the beta yet, the Pixel 6a and newer models can still be enrolled through the Android Beta Program.

The exclusion of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro is not a surprise. These devices were released in 2021, and Google’s software support policy covers five years of updates. By the time Android 17 QPR2 becomes stable, those phones will have reached the end of that support window. Pixel users on older devices should note that the final stable QPR release may not be available to them.

Quick Settings layout editor

One of the most visible additions in Beta 3 is the new Quick Settings layout editor. Users can now reorder the layout of the Quick Settings panel more freely, making it easier to put frequently used tiles where they can be reached quickly. This change brings a level of customization that Android users have wanted for a long time. The editor is designed to let you rearrange tiles without having to dig into system settings or use a third-party customization app.

It is a small but meaningful quality-of-life improvement. Quick Settings has always allowed some tile management, but the new editor makes the process more intuitive and gives users direct control over the panel’s arrangement.

Expanded theming controls

Google is also expanding theming controls in Android 17. The system will now include a hue slider in addition to four main color styles. This gives users a more granular way to adjust the feel of their device. Instead of relying solely on preset color options, you can fine-tune the accent color to better match your wallpaper and aesthetic preferences.

The changes are part of Google’s broader effort to make Android more personal. Material You is already a key part of the operating system, allowing colors to be extracted from wallpaper. With the hue slider, Android 17 takes that idea further, offering users more control over the exact shade used across the interface.

More blur effects

Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 continues Google’s push to expand blur effects across the system. The latest build brings the effect to more parts of the interface, including lock screen shortcuts, the fingerprint button, and notifications. These subtle visual changes make the system feel more polished and cohesive.

Blur effects have become a signature part of modern Android design. They help to layer information visually, making it easier to focus on what is in the foreground. By extending the effect to more system elements, Google is improving both form and function.

Multitasking improvements for foldables

Foldable phone owners are getting a handy upgrade in Beta 3. Apps running in windows now show an app handle that can be dragged to transition between full-screen and split-screen modes. This makes it much easier to switch between different multitasking states without navigating through menus.

There is also a new shortcut for opening a bubble in full-screen mode. When compared with earlier developer builds, the main difference is that the “Move to fullscreen” shortcut has been moved to the top of the context menu. This simplifies the workflow for users who frequently use bubbles for messaging and media apps.

The improvements reflect Google’s continued investment in large-screen devices. With the Pixel Fold and other foldable devices growing in popularity, refined multitasking controls are essential. A more flexible window system allows users to get more done on the go, whether they are comparing documents, watching video while chatting, or using two apps side by side.

Protections against call-forwarding scams

One of the most important changes in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 is a new security feature aimed at call-forwarding scams. These scams work by tricking victims into entering a code that redirects incoming calls to a number controlled by the scammer. This can give attackers access to accounts protected by phone-based verification, because the verification codes sent via SMS or phone calls end up in the hands of the attacker.

Android 17 introduces restrictions on call-forwarding USSD codes, including codes such as 21 and related variants. Regular apps can no longer use the TelephonyManager.sendUssdRequest() API to execute these codes in the background with only the CALL_PHONE permission. If an app attempts to do this, the system will block the request and return a USSD_ERROR_NOT_ALLOWED callback. This prevents malicious apps from hiding the actual call-forwarding action from the user.

The update also adds an OS-level confirmation dialog when users manually enter call-forwarding codes through the system dialer. The dialog is an extra step intended to give users a chance to realize what they are doing. Scammers often rely on confusion and pressure, and a system confirmation can help break that chain.

Google is careful to note that this change does not affect other types of USSD requests, such as mobile-money transfers and account checks. The restrictions are targeted specifically at call-forwarding codes, which are the primary vector for this kind of fraud.

Call-forwarding scams have become a serious problem in many countries. Attackers can use the redirected calls to intercept one-time passwords and gain access to banking accounts, email services, and social media profiles. By restricting the use of call-forwarding codes, Android is adding a meaningful layer of defense that works across the whole operating system.

Bug fixes in Beta 3

As with any beta release, Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 includes a number of bug fixes. One notable fix addresses a problem where opening the notification shade or Quick Settings could cause visual corruption and lead to an unexpected device restart. That kind of crash is particularly annoying because it interrupts whatever you are doing and can make the system feel unreliable.

The update also fixes an issue in the Device Health and Support tool that could incorrectly warn users that their battery capacity had degraded. A false warning like that can be concerning, so it is good to see Google correcting the underlying bug.

Terminal app link handling

For users of the Terminal app, Beta 3 adds an option to control how links opened inside a virtual machine are handled. You can choose to automatically forward web URLs from the VM to the host’s browser, or open them inside a browser running within the VM, if one is installed. It is a niche but welcome addition for developers and power users who run virtual machines on their Android devices.

This brings flexibility to a workflow that has become more common as Android devices gain the ability to run Linux virtual machines. By making link handling configurable, Google is acknowledging that different users have different preferences when working in virtualized environments.
