Google has finally entered the physical tracker market with the Pixel Tag, a device designed to compete directly with Apple's AirTag. After more than two years of building out its own Find Hub network, the company is now offering its own hardware to help users locate lost keys, bags, and other belongings. The Pixel Tag is scheduled to launch in November and brings several advanced features that set it apart from many existing trackers, including a combination of ultra wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth Channel Sounding technology.

Pricing and availability

The Pixel Tag will retail for $29, with a four-pack available for $99. This pricing places it exactly in line with Apple's AirTag 2, making it a direct competitor in both features and cost. The device goes on sale on November 11th. Unlike Google's newly announced Pixel 11 phones and Pixel Watch 5, which are already available for preorder and will ship next week, the Pixel Tag will require a bit more patience. It will be available through Google's online store and likely other retail partners, though Google has not yet provided a full list of distribution channels.

Design and hardware

The Pixel Tag is a slim, oblong device that comes in a single color option called Fog, which is essentially a grayish tone. It weighs about 12 grams, or 0.4 ounces, making it light enough to attach to everyday items. Like Apple's AirTag, the Pixel Tag does not include any built-in hooks, clips, or adhesive loops for attaching it to objects. Instead, users will need to purchase third-party accessories such as keychains, holders, or adhesive mounts. This is a common approach among trackers, as it allows users to choose the attachment method that best suits their needs.

There is a single button on the device that triggers a sound on your phone. This is useful in the rare situation where you have found the Tag but cannot locate your smartphone. The button is designed to play a chime that helps you track down your phone, providing a two-way locating feature. The Pixel Tag also carries an IP67 rating, meaning it is protected against dust and can withstand temporary submersion in water. This makes it suitable for outdoor use and ensures it can handle rain or accidental splashes.

Power is provided by a standard CR2032 coin battery, which is widely available and easy to replace. Google says the battery should last for over a year under normal usage. The replaceable battery design extends the lifespan of the device, so users do not have to purchase a new tracker when the battery dies.

Precision tracking: UWB and Channel Sounding

One of the standout features of the Pixel Tag is its dual approach to precision tracking. It is equipped with ultra wideband (UWB) technology, which allows the Find Hub app to display both the distance and the direction to the tracker when you are nearby. To take advantage of UWB, you need a smartphone with a UWB chip. Google's Pixel 10 and later are expected to support this, as are Pixel Pro models dating back to the Pixel 6 Pro. The base Pixel 11, however, notably lacks UWB, so owners of that specific model will not be able to use the directional tracking feature.

In addition to UWB, the Pixel Tag is one of the first trackers to support Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding. This newer technology can determine the exact distance between the phone and the tracker, but it does not provide directional information. Channel Sounding works with any phone or tablet that includes Bluetooth 6.0, which broadens the range of devices that can take advantage of precise distance measurements. The only other tracker on the market to currently support Channel Sounding is the Moto Tag 2, making the Pixel Tag an early adopter of this emerging standard.

The combination of UWB and Channel Sounding gives the Pixel Tag a distinct advantage in accuracy. While UWB offers a more complete picture with direction, Channel Sounding can still provide highly accurate distance readings even on devices that lack UWB hardware. This layered approach ensures that more users can benefit from precise tracking, regardless of their phone model.

Compatibility and software

The Pixel Tag works with Google's Find Hub network, which leverages the Bluetooth capabilities of Android devices around the world to help locate lost items. This crowdsourced network has been operational for over two years, and while it had a rocky start, it has improved steadily. Recent tests have shown that the Find Hub network is still somewhat less precise than Apple's Find My network, but the gap has narrowed. The addition of dedicated tracker hardware from Google is likely to encourage more Android users to participate, which could further strengthen the network's coverage.

For users with compatible Pixel devices, the integration is seamless. The Find Hub app displays the location of the Pixel Tag on a map, and when you are in close range, the app switches to precision tracking. If you are using a Pixel Watch, you can also track the Tag directly from your wrist. Pixel Watch 2 or later includes UWB, while Pixel Watch 4 and newer support Channel Sounding. Google has also enabled Gemini integration, allowing users to ask the assistant to ring the Pixel Tag's speaker. This hands-free control is a nice touch for users who are already invested in Google's ecosystem.

How it compares with the AirTag

The most obvious comparison is with Apple's AirTag 2, which has long been the benchmark for Bluetooth trackers. Both devices are priced identically, with a single unit costing $29 and a four-pack costing $99. Both use a replaceable CR2032 battery and lack built-in attachment methods. Both are water-resistant, though the Pixel Tag's IP67 rating matches the AirTag 2's water resistance.

The key differences lie in the tracking technology and the ecosystems. The AirTag 2 relies on Apple's Find My network, which is widely regarded as the most robust and accurate crowdsourced tracking network available. The Pixel Tag uses Google's Find Hub network, which is newer and still catching up in terms of precision and reliability. However, the Pixel Tag has a hardware advantage in that it supports both UWB and Bluetooth Channel Sounding, while the AirTag 2 does not include Channel Sounding. This could make the Pixel Tag more accurate in certain distance-measuring scenarios, especially with non-UWB devices.

In terms of design, the Pixel Tag is longer and thinner than the AirTag, which is a small circular disc. This shape might be more convenient for some use cases, such as slipping into a wallet or a thin pocket. The single gray color option is more limited than the AirTag's range of accessories and colors, although third-party accessories can customize the look anyway.

The road to Google's tracker

Google's entry into the tracker market has been a long time coming. The company launched its Find Hub network in 2024, but initially relied on third-party trackers from companies like Chipolo and Pebblebee. These trackers worked with the network, but Google itself refrained from manufacturing a first-party device. This was similar to Apple's strategy before the AirTag launched, when the Find My network was used by third-party accessories. Apple eventually introduced the AirTag in 2021, and it became a hugely popular product.

Google's delay was likely due to the need to build a reliable network and address privacy concerns. Crowdsourced tracking networks have been criticized for the potential to be used for stalking. Both Apple and Google have implemented safeguards, such as unwanted tracking alerts that notify users if an unknown tracker is traveling with them. Google's Find Hub network has been designed with these protections in mind, and the Pixel Tag is expected to be fully compliant with industry standards for anti-stalking measures.

The timing of the Pixel Tag's launch is also significant. It arrives alongside a major Pixel hardware event, where Google announced the Pixel 11 series and Pixel Watch 5. By bundling the tracker with its ecosystem announcements, Google is signaling that the Pixel Tag is a core part of its hardware lineup. The November launch date gives buyers a chance to consider the device during the holiday shopping season, which is a prime period for gadget sales.

Future outlook and software updates

The success of the Pixel Tag will depend heavily on the continued improvement of Google's Find Hub network. While the network has gotten better, it still trails Apple's Find My in many regions. Google will need to encourage more Android users to opt into the network and keep their Bluetooth enabled for crowdsourcing to work effectively. The company could also introduce additional features over time, such as precision finding for more devices or integration with third-party apps.

There is also potential for future versions of the Pixel Tag to come in different colors or shapes, as the current model is quite limited in customization. Google's hardware division has been expanding its portfolio, and a more diverse tracker lineup would not be surprising. For now, the Pixel Tag represents a solid first attempt by Google, offering a competitive price and cutting-edge tracking technologies that could appeal to Android users who have been waiting for a first-party alternative to the AirTag.
