Apple has taken the wraps off the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, a pair of flagship phones that push the company's camera, silicon, and battery ambitions further than before. The announcement came during Apple's 'Surprise and shine' event on Wednesday, where the company also detailed new Apple Intelligence and Siri AI experiences. The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are positioned as the most capable iPhones yet, with a dynamic aperture main camera, a new A20 Pro chip, and the first C2 cellular modem in an iPhone. They arrive as smartphone makers face pressure to justify rising prices with meaningful hardware upgrades.
Pricing, storage, and release date
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 for 256GB, a $100 increase over the iPhone 17 Pro. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, also with 256GB of storage. Both models are available in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations. Preorders begin on September 12, ahead of availability on September 18. The GPU is a significantly advanced 7-core design that enables a 40 percent increase in performance, according to Sribalan Santhanam, VP of Apple's silicon engineering group. Apple has also added a second neural engine for a total of 32 NPU cores. That neural engine capacity matters for Apple Intelligence features, which run a mix of on-device and cloud processing. More NPU cores can speed up tasks such as image analysis, language processing, and generative features without relying entirely on remote servers. The 2nm process should also improve efficiency, helping the chip deliver more performance per watt.
Cooling and battery life
The iPhone 18 Pro includes a next-generation vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the one in the iPhone 17 Pro. That larger vapor chamber is designed to spread heat more effectively during gaming, video recording, and AI workloads. According to Rich Dinh, VP of hardware engineering, the iPhone 18 Pro has all-day battery life comparable to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Video playback is rated at 36 hours for the iPhone 18 Pro, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max gets 45 hours. Apple says just 15 minutes of wired charging provides 50 percent charge for the iPhone 18 Pro. For the iPhone 18 Pro Max, five minutes of wired charging gets you seven hours of video playback. Those figures suggest Apple is focusing on both endurance and quick top-ups, a combination that matters for users who record high-resolution video or rely on navigation and hotspot features.
Dynamic aperture main camera
The camera system is the headline upgrade. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro offers the biggest camera improvement in years, including a 48-megapixel variable-aperture main camera with six blades that are thinner than a human hair and a new sensor. In darker environments, the aperture opens up to let in more light, which means night mode captures will be faster with better quality. Variable aperture is a rarity in smartphones. Most phone cameras use a fixed aperture, so the only way to control exposure is through shutter speed, ISO, and computational processing. Apple is also offering Pro controls to give users more manual control over the camera, such as changing shutter speed to tweak motion blur. Pro controls are available for both photos and videos. There are improvements to photographic styles, offering texture and grain control. These additions move the iPhone further into enthusiast territory, where photographers and videographers want to shape the look of an image rather than accept a fully automatic result. Apple will support Google's SynthID content authenticity protocol, as well as a new Apple Reference Image standard that cryptographically signs images at capture, creating an unalterable digital negative.
