Should You Buy the Apple Vision Pro?

The Apple Vision Pro, priced at $3,500, remains a niche product due to its high cost and limited workflow integration. It excels at watching movies, viewing 3D videos, and serving as a Mac display, but many users find it heavy and fatiguing despite the improved Dual Knit Band introduced with the M5 chip. The headset also requires an external battery pack and is cumbersome for travel. Before purchasing, potential buyers are advised to try the Vision Pro at an Apple Store and thoroughly research compatible apps and workflows. Apple refreshed the device with an M5 chip in October 2025, making now a good time to buy, as a next-generation update is not expected for at least two years.

Design and Display

The Vision Pro resembles a pair of ski goggles with a laminated glass front and aluminum alloy frame. A magnetic Light Seal conforms to the face, blocking light. The M5 model includes a Dual Knit Band with two straps (behind the head and top) for better weight distribution. Inside, dual micro-OLED displays deliver over 4K resolution per eye (23 million pixels total) and an EyeSight external display shows the wearer's eyes to others. The M5 chip enables rendering 10% more pixels and supports a 120Hz refresh rate for smoother visuals. Custom Zeiss prescription lens inserts are available for $149 (readers $99).

Cameras, Sensors, and Navigation

The headset uses 12 cameras and 5 sensors for hand tracking, head tracking, and environment mapping. Navigation is entirely via eye tracking, hand gestures, and voice commands. Optic ID uses iris scanning for authentication. A 3D camera captures spatial photos and videos. The device also features dual-driver audio pods with spatial audio and six microphones for calls and voice commands.

Processors and RAM

The M5 chip (10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine) powers visionOS with 153GB/s memory bandwidth and 16GB RAM. It works alongside the R1 chip for real-time sensor processing. Storage options are 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. The M5 provides a 50% boost in AI performance over the M2, enabling faster Persona generation and spatial scene rendering.

Battery Life

The external battery pack offers up to 2.5 hours of general use and 3 hours of video playback. Additional battery packs can be swapped out, and the device can run indefinitely when plugged into power.

visionOS and Software

visionOS 26, released in September 2025, introduces persistent widgets, more lifelike Personas, shared experiences with other Vision Pro users, and a Jupiter Environment. The headset can run iPhone and iPad apps and connect to a Mac as a 4K display with Wide and Ultrawide modes. Upcoming visionOS 27 will add face gestures for system actions, Vehicle Motion Cues for passengers, and improved hearing aid support.

Medical Warnings and Future Roadmap

Apple warns that the Vision Pro may exacerbate conditions like heart issues, migraines, dizziness, and eye problems. It can interfere with pacemakers and hearing aids. Looking ahead, Apple is pausing next-generation Vision Pro development to focus on smart glasses (expected 2026–2027) that will integrate with Siri and AI. A cheaper enclosed headset may arrive in a few years. Longer-term, augmented reality glasses remain a priority, though a Mac-connected version was halted. Apple is also exploring health applications, including mental health monitoring via facial expressions and eye-tracking.
